Sleep Apnea Study – Adventures in Medicine 2008 10 02

Sleep Apnea is when your breathing stops during sleep, and it can be fatal.

I made this video, with the help of the tech, Mark, to help those who are told they need a sleep study to diagnose sleep apnea.

There is humor in anything, I think, but sleep apnea can be deadly and is not a joke.

If your doc wants you tested, get tested.

I will get my results in a week or so.

sleep apnea children treatment

Does my child have sleep apnea?

My son is four years, mostly snoring at night and sleep during an atomic explosion. She has said more recently of feeling tired after coming home from childcare. This has been happening over the last 3 or 4 months old. Normally receive 10 hours of sleep every night, and mostly keep to a strict schedule. She looks like a dream most of the time, attention is fading, and although he has always been a struggle, it does have security problems that most children have. For example, she is trying to run in a parking lot (on all because she is excited), but you have heard about mutiple times carefully. Although my wife and I believe that eventually would be in Gifted and Talented, The recent behavior has caused some concern. What doctor (specialist) should be seen this? Has anyone experienced this before? Improvement seen after treatment? Any change in the home to be tried before seeing a doctor?

Yes, take her to the DR. Dr ear and throat.

sleep apnea in children treatment

Obstructive sleep apnea in normal children is almost always caused by size (hypertrophy), tonsils and adenoids). These children show sleep patterns typical of sleep apnea. They are loud snoring, frequent pauses in breathing at night, frequent awakenings from sleep, restless sleep, nightmares and bedwetting (enuresis). During the day, these children breathe through the mouth, may have excessive daytime sleepiness and poor school performance.

Other less common causes of sleep apnea include congenital (present from birth) or acquired cause of obstruction of the upper airway.

Treatment of obstructive sleep apnea goes to the cause of obstruction.

As noted above, most cases of obstructive apnea sleep in children is caused by inflammation of the tonsils and adenoids. Surgical interventions are therefore directed to what is causing obstruction. In the case of the tonsils and adenoids, tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy is usually successful in alleviating the problem. If the problem is not the tonsils and adenoids, the cause of the obstruction must be determined. For example, jaw surgery may be required. In some cases, even a tracheostomy is necessary. Nonsurgical therapies include oral prostheses (difficult in children), drugs (steroids, stimulants), and weight reduction.

In almost all cases of obstructive sleep apnea in children who do not have unusual anatomic problems, tonsillectomy and Adenoidectomy is a treatment safe and effective, and is highly recommended.
